Digital Mapping

On our previous trip to southern Africa in 2007 we relied upon the Fugawi Southern Africa digital mapping. This was OK but expensive and the mapping was not particularly up to date (it is a long time since the main international airport at Jo’burg was named after Jan Smuts!). This time we opted for the cheaper and much more up to date Tracks4Africa system;

GPS

Our main GPS is a Garmin 60CSX but we have brought a Garmin eTrex Vista C and Quest as backups – it is a long trip and we will be relying on these in hot, dusty environments where they will be subject to a lot of vibration;

Paper Maps

Various – on our previous trip we found Veronica Roodt’s detailed maps of the Botswana game reserves published by Shell very useful.
